As a Personal Trainer, I meet many amazing people daily from all walks of life; different professions and different ages walk through the doors of a gym. When sitting down to do a consultation with someone, I ask a number of questions to not only find out this person’s past history and training experience but also the reason why they are wanting to take there health and fitness to the next level and how important it is to them!
‘I want to loose 5 or 10kg’, ‘I want to look good for summer’, or ‘I want to be fitter’ are some of the responses, which some people may have, but often when it comes to crunch time are they willing to give up ________ or do ________ to reach this goal? Unfortunately most of the time its ‘NO’! Why? Because they haven’t evaluated their priorities and realised the sacrifices to be made to make it happen! ‘I’m tired’, ‘I haven’t got time’, or ‘I had a social event on so I couldn’t do that’ are just excuses, take action into your own hands!
I’m not saying that I don’t live in the same world as my clients, I too lead a very busy life, have social events on though to me it’s the decision that I make which determines what the end result is! There are plenty of times that I still show up whether I want to train or not, I make choices, sacrifices and eat food that I sometimes get sick of but I know its what I need to do because I want it bad enough! There are many people who have all the odds stacked against them but are moving one step closer to their goal despite it all.
Following steps will help you take control and turn your goal into a reality! Here’s how:
- Get Real. Set smaller realistic goals that you know are more achievable rather than staring down the barrel and setting a huge end goal, which may never seem achievable. This way you are more likely to stay on track and not become disappointed.
- Decide. Taking a moment to pause and prioritize is a crucial first step in accomplishing them.
- Make a Plan. Pretty self-explanatory.
- Ask for Help. Don’t be shy about asking for help from family, friends, or even acquaintances that are in a position to be of service, this will also keep you accountable.
